No matter how well made a set of dentures are, there will always be a very small gap between the bottom of the dentures, and the actual gums of the patient. At the beginning of using those dentures the gap is so small and the patient’s saliva fills that gap so well that usually the patient will not notice.
However, over time the bone and the gums of the patient may change, and this could increase the size of the gap and therefore the way that the dentures fit in the patient. If dentures dry out, or are put in hot water, they can warp and change their shape, which is another way that dentures can stop fitting. If the gap between the dentures and the gums gets very large, the dentures will no longer be secure and will start to move around in the mouth.
Denture Adhesive
That is why denture adhesives were created, so that this gap could be filled and the dentures helped to stay in the place where they are meant to be. Many people who wear dentures prefer to use adhesive pastes rather than adhesive powders, because they will be much easier to use.
However, there are side effects and consequences to using dental adhesive. In particular, it can create a false sense of security of the patient, because although the initial problems may have disappeared, the problem causing them has not: the dentures no longer fit the patient that well, and they will only fit better if they are remade.
Adhesives are not easy to apply either, but are incredibly messy – and the patient will need to clean all of the adhesive off the dentures at least once a day, which can be very time consuming. It can also be difficult and very messy when you try to remove it, and when you factor in the cost of buying the adhesive every week or so, you start to think that there must be an easier way around it.
Implant Supported Denture
And there is. There is a new technology called miniature implants, and these can be put into your mouth to give much superior stability and hold to your dentures, and they do not require any sort of adhesive. Only local anaesthetic is needed to place them into your mouth, and you can even have your current dentures re-fitted to work with the implants perfectly.
Implants also have a great secondary benefit which is that it slows down the erosion of the bone and gum line, reducing friction sores within the mouths of patients who have dentures.
